There are some intricacies to "where should I farm for certain gear", but to be honest most of it doesn't matter until Hell difficulty. You get -30% all resists in Nightmare and -60% all resists in Hell. It's fine if you hit a wall and need to farm a zone a ton until you get something that unblocks you. This game gets harder in nightmare, and much harder in hell, so be mindful of that. You will learn a few tricks from it, and concepts that will serve you in your first journey (runewords, attack rating, monsters with immunities etc). You can, but don't expect that will be effective through out your campaign, specializing in a specific class is a design choice so that players will require to make a choice in how they will tackle the game since each skill tree provides different gameplay opportunities. "Hey I will make a Fire,Wizard and Lightning Sorc since why not?" You get a character respec each difficulty so there's that. Leave this to Nightmare and Hell Difficulty. Gather as much as data in regards items but min-maxing is not yet mandatory. That will give you an idea on how each map and boss fight works. Normal difficulty can be cleared with no guides at all.
